[heathkit] (no subject)

I just got home from the dentist and am still groggy... so cut me some slack..I have a comment that "may be useful"....

usually when batteries are in equipment, it isn't unusual that they are used as "voltage references".   If the batteries are taken out then the "reference voltage is gone".  If a supply is to run without them, then the batteries need to be removed and zener diodes of the equivalent voltage or as close as you can get, need to be substituted for the batteries.

Simply put,  if the batteries are missing, the voltage reference is gone and zener diodes will work in their place to restore the reference voltages.  Of course the zeners will NOT operate the radio.  They are there just to set the voltages to the right voltage.

Hope this helps... Bob

I have acquired a HEATHKIT meter Model IM-104, with no assembly or operating instructions.  Simply put, no paperwork.  An electrical engineer friend thinks it is an electronic meter and that absolutely nothing will operate without a full set of batteries.  It obviously takes one D cell, with two slots for what I thought were for two pairs of double AA's.  Double AA's do not fit, triple AA's are too small.  We were unable to find a battery of the right length in three different battery catalogs.   We thought possibly it requires two pairs of 4.5 volt batteries.  The meter itself is a West meter with an apparent number of 407-169.
Does anyone know what are the correct batteries and where they might be obtained?  Also, does anyone have the paperwork for this kit.  John Demcisak
