[heathkit] SB-104 Sideband issues

After selling my HW-202 and my HW-12 to get the money, I bought an SB-104. I am faily well pleased (well worth the trade) with the radio. Th OM who built it did an excellent job. It does have a couple of problems that I hope are minor and may be connected. 

When I first tuned it on everthing worked fine when I checked into a net on USB. Good reports both ways.
I went 75m and to my surprise found everything almost uncopiable. I switched to USB and the "Hi and Tight" character vanished. It is the same on all bands; USB is broad as a barn door and LSB. Problem #2: the digital display is of by 500KHz. Any one have any ideas?
